The result was minimal visibility into student progress. The need for a comprehensive solution to seamlessly integrate with Ceibal’s existing systems, including Conferences and their student management system, was evident.

In pursuit of a more engaging learning environment, Ceibal chose PowerSchool Schoology Learning. Its user-centric design, nationwide scalability, strong integration capabilities, and Spanish language support made it the perfect fit.

Nationwide Digital Upgrade in Education

Implementing Schoology Learning across Uruguay’s public schools was a significant task for Ceibal, impacting over 655,000 individuals throughout the country.

While the project was extensive, the process was smooth and efficient, as Carballo notes. He says, “PowerSchool’s implementation team has been with us each step of the way for nearly a decade, and their passion toward providing intuitive software solutions for schools around the world is the reason we continue to invest in this reliable education technology platform.”

The massive Schoology Learning rollout modernized educational access from urban centers to rural areas. Now, educators nationwide can create materials and manage gradebooks efficiently, allowing more focus on student-centric activities.

World Bank Study: A Benchmark of Success

The strategic implementation of digital solutions like Schoology Learning is credited with helping Uruguay’s education system weather global challenges like the pandemic. While the average class loss in Latin America was about 1.3 years, a World Bank study showed Uruguay limited learning loss to just 0.5 years, thanks to Ceibal’s effective deployment of digital resources.

This success is reflected in Carballo’s observations. He highlights, “Schoology Learning has played a key part in helping Plan Ceibal’s mission to ensure Uruguayan educators and students have access to education technology.”

After the rollout of Schoology Learning, there was a surge in collaboration and community among Ceibal’s educators and students. The platform did more than just digital learning—it created a lively educational community, improving connections and sharing among teachers, students, and parents.

The seamless transition to digital learning resulted in elevated levels of user satisfaction.  The efficient and expedited onboarding of new teachers during the pandemic proved the solution’s worth as a true 21st century tool.

Schoology Learning played a crucial role in maintaining educational continuity, proving vital for in-class and at-home learning. Continuous Innovation for a Brighter Future

In 2024, Ceibal adopted PowerSchool Connected Intelligence K12, an innovative data-as-a-service platform tailored for educational institutions. This platform enables Ceibal to securely centralize student information along with data from their learning management system (PowerSchool Schoology Learning) and devices.

By integrating this previously-siloed data, Ceibal is gaining valuable insights that inform decision-making and support public policy in Uruguay. Additionally, this platform empowers Ceibal to better support national initiatives by providing actionable analytics, driving efforts to improve educational outcomes and addressing broader societal challenges.

The selection of PowerSchool Connected Intelligence K12 was driven by its ease of use, scalability, cost savings, and potential to consolidate services that previously required multiple platforms. Ceibal had explored other solutions, such as building their own data lake and testing other data management platforms (that lacked key functionality), but ultimately chose to expand their partnership with PowerSchool by adopting Connected Intelligence.

Currently, Ceibal is working on six use cases, including sentiment analysis to detect cyberbullying, analyzing LMS usage trends, and detecting drop-offs in device usage. Connected Intelligence is paving the way for full-scale adoption of the platform, opening doors for predicting student performance, identifying at-risk students, and enhancing overall educational analytics.
