Massapequa School District is a suburban, Long Island school district that had been struggling with a lack of collaboration within its eight K-12 schools. Disparate tools, multiple logins, and inadequate technology were not meeting the district’s needs nor those of its 7,000 students. The result was poor communication between teachers, outdated learning opportunities, and a lack of parent engagement in their children’s education.
The district needed a change. It needed to revolutionize its classroom—and school—to better drive student growth, empower teachers, and power operations. Massapequa School District’s step towards modernization started with a switch to a new technical infrastructure and foundation for managing and utilizing student data: PowerSchool Student Information System (SIS). This provided the district with a modern, easy-to-use solution to improve administrative productivity, stimulate classroom learning, and ensure funding through accurate, timely state reporting. Because PowerSchool is built to integrate seamlessly with other third-party software that schools use, this change helped unify the classroom and overcome the challenge of disparate tools and multiple logins.
Massapequa School District’s next important change came in the form of an improved student learning management system (LMS). The district partnered with PowerSchool Learning, which helped the district better engage students with dynamic, modern communication and collaborative tools accessible anytime and anywhere. Educators throughout the district enjoyed improved collaboration, and students experienced the benefits of dynamic, 21st-century learning tools.
“I truly believe that PowerSchool has allowed us to amplify our student voices,” said Ed Kemnitzer, Executive Assistant for Technology Integration of Curriculum Support and Development. “We’ve given them a platform to share their voices, share their work, and collaborate. It’s become a great way for all students K-12 – from all different socioeconomic classes – to really become part of the conversation.”
Plus, parents were able to access their students’ classes, assignments, grades and more from anywhere at any time.
